The U.S. women’s gymnastics team is back on top, winning gold at the Olympics after a silver finish at Tokyo 2020.
Simone Biles now holds eight Olympic medals, including five gold, surpassing Shannon Miller to become the most decorated U.S. Olympic gymnast. Alongside Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera, Biles helped secure the fourth Olympic gold for an American team in this event.
Biles expressed relief after her vault, the event that caused her ‘twisties’ and withdrawal in Tokyo.
Carey, the reigning Olympic floor champion, opted out of competing in the team final following a fall in the qualifiers. “This means everything to me,” Carey said. He felt honored to be on this team.
Rivera, the youngest member of the entire U.S. delegation, was not selected for any lineups, with the U.S. relying on its veterans. Biles and Chiles competed in all four events, while Lee participated in uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise.
“It’s been an amazing experience,” Rivera said. “Practicing with them is incredible because I see their hard work in the gym. I was thrilled to support them tonight. Despite everything, we managed to pull it together when it mattered most. I’m so proud of this team.”
Great Britain made a remarkable comeback, advancing to the final after finishing seventh in qualifications. Although the team won bronze in Tokyo, injuries to top athletes cast doubt on their medal hopes, and they finished fourth.
